Propecia and Rogaine aren't Working - Should I Try Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)?- Monday, July 20, 2009

Question:

I've been on Propecia and Rogaine now for approximately 7 month. I am not quite sure whether these medications are working since I am seeing more or less the same amount of hair loss. I am slowly losing hair in the crown more than any other area. Do you think I ought to consider platelet rich plasma (PRP)? I am willing to take the treatment now since I was impressed with the pictures I saw on your forum. What do you think?

Answer:

To date, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is not a proven hair loss treatment and is still considered experimental. Even though there's been some apparent good news presented on our hair loss forum, I am concerned that it may have been overhyped by members online. Personally, I am not going to consider any treatment that hasn't been proven or at least shown to work safely and effectively for hundreds of balding men. PRP may be relatively inexpensive, but the long term effects and the frequency of treatments needed to achieve and maintain the desired results are not yet known.

Propecia and Rogaine may or may not be working for you. However, remember that they're both usually better at slowing down or stopping hair loss than regrowing new hair. Also, I'd suggest using Propecia the full year as per what's recommended by Merck. Since you're already on Rogaine, you might as well go the distance with that too.
