How Can I Cure My Hair Loss?- Monday, February 18, 2008

Question:

Is there a cure for hair loss? I'm an 18 year old male suffering from baldness in the crown and really want my hair back. Please help!

Answer:

Though there is currently no hair loss cure, the good news is, hair loss can be treated with FDA approved non surgical hair loss treatments such as Propecia (finasteride) and Rogaine (minoxidil). Finasteride, the active ingredient in Propecia, works by inhibiting dihydrotestosterone or DHT (the hormone responsible for hereditary hair loss) by blocking 5-alpha-reductase enzymes, which when combined with the hormone testosterone, turns into DHT. Minoxidil, the active ingredient in Rogaine, works by stimulating hair follicles by increasing circulation to the scalp. When these two hair loss drugs are used in combination with one another, balding men have the greatest chance of combating against hair loss and may even possibly regrow hair.

At your age, I strongly suggest consulting with a physician to learn about the benefits, risks, and limitations of these two hair loss medications and consider getting on them to possibly prevent future baldness.
