Do I have to Use Hair Loss Treatment Propecia and Rogaine for Life? - Sunday, May 04, 2008

Question:

I have been in your hair loss forum a couple of times before to understand different baldness treatments available. Undoubtedly Rogaine (minoxidil) and Propecia (finasteride) are on the top of my list. But here is my question: once I start using Rogaine or Propecia, do I have to use these for life? What would be the consequences if I stop using the medication?

Answer:

Propecia and Rogaine can be quite effective in treating baldness and possibly even stimulate hair regrowth. Unfortunately however, stopping finasteride and minoxidil will result in all loss of benefit of these medications. Any new hair growth from them will fall out, and any hair maintained by the drugs will continue to progress as dictated by your genes. Unfortunately, to continue receiving the benefit of Propecia and Rogaine, you have to continue using it. Maybe if we are lucky a baldness cure will be eventually available and we can be done with it once and for all!
