Excessive Hair Shedding Upon Starting Propecia for Hair Loss Every Other Day - Is This Normal? - Monday, October 20, 2008
Question:
Before I started taking Propecia my hair loss was gradual. Now that I'm taking this drug for baldness it's speeding up. I've heard that this is normal uponstarting Propecia but will it definitely return? I don't want to take this medication and then find out it has only accelerated hair loss. Also, is it ok to take Propecia every other delay?
Answer:
Far be it for me to make you promises and guarantees. However, excessive hair shedding can be typical uponstarting Propecia (finasteride) or even Rogaine (minoxidil). Accelerated hair loss is not a reported side effect of either hair loss treatment.
Propecia's website recommends 1 pill (1mg) of finasteride daily. Hair restoration physician Dr. Jerry Cooley recently made a good case for taking varying dosages of finasteride. To see Dr. Cooley's response, view our hair loss forum discussion thread "Taking Propecia Every Other Day?"
