Use of Xandrox for Female Hair Loss is Causing Unwanted Hair Growth and Itchy Scalp- Monday, November 17, 2008 Question: I am a 31 year old female with hair loss and I started using Xandrox one month ago. Now that I've bought the second box, I am noticing some side effects such as weight gain and an increase in facial hair. I am so worried and need your opinion on whether or not I should continue using it. I am not sure, but I think the type of Xandrox I use is betamethasone free, because I always feel itchy. The website I bought it from says I shouldn't experience any side effects. Answer: Xandrox contains two active ingredients, minoxidil and azelaic acid. Both of these ingredients have potential side effects, especially when used in larger dosages. Minoxidil is the same active ingredient in Rogaine. Whereas the female version of Rogaine includes the 2% minoxidil solution, the male version contains 5%. Xandrox also contains 5% or even more minoxidil in some products. Though some dermatologists suggest Rogaine 5% for women, it has been known to cause unwanted facial and body hair growth. The 2% solution minimizes this unwanted side effect. Unexplained weight gain is also a reported side effect of minoxidil among others. Learn more about Rogaine side effects. Azelaic acid is conjectured to inhibit the binding of DHT to the hair follicle receptor, potentially preventing hair loss. Azelaic acid has been known to cause scalp irritation and itching. In my opinion, you may want to consider a minoxidil 2% solution and ditch Xandrox if it's causing weight gain and unwanted hair growth.
