Dr. Cooley has an excellent reputation among his peers as one of the premiere surgeons doing ultra refined follicular unit transplantation. He is also noted for his laboratory research on hair cloning.

Dr. Cooley’s very experienced staff prepare all the follicular unit grafts using microscopes exclusively. He  carefully creates all the incisions for these refined grafts using very tiny custom cut blades. By carefully controling the angle, direction and depth of these incisions he creates a very natural pattern and direction for the new hair, even in the temples and sides. 

The special instruments he uses create tiny and minimally invasive incisions that enable very small grafts to be placed close together. This enables his patients to achieve cosmetic density in a given area after only one surgical session.

Dr. Cooley's academic credentials are particularly notable.  He graduated with honors from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine and completed a medical internship at Johns Hopkins and a dermatologic residency at the University of Maryland where he served as chief resident. During this time, Dr. Cooley performed research studies on "cloning" hair follicle cells with fellow researchers at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. While in Baltimore he also trained extensively with Dr. James Vogel, another well recognized plastic surgeon also from Johns Hopkins.

Dr. Cooley is a board certified dermatologist and dermatologic surgeon.  Certified by the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgeons (ABHRS), Dr. Cooley serves on the ABHRS Examination Committee and is an active member of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS), the world’s largest organization of hair restoration surgeons. He has served on the Society's scientific and Internet committees and was named "Surgeon of the Month" by ISHRS' International Hair Transplant Forum for his contributions to the field. 

Dr. Cooley received ISHRS's "Outstanding Effort Award" at its 11th Annual Scientific Meeting in New York in October, 2003 where he served as Chairman.  While in Rome, Dr. Cooley received the 2003 International Society of Hair Restoration (ISHR) "Milestones Award."  

Although general and cosmetic dermatology are part of his practice, hair transplantation is his main focus. Those who are in the Carolinas can go to Dr. Cooley knowing that they will receive quality work that is first rate by national and international standards. Dr. Cooley takes a holistic approach to hair restoration and will also prescribe non-surgical medications like Propecia.

Dr. Cooley has published scientific articles in prominent medical journals including the Dermatologic Surgery, Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, Dermatologic Clinics, and the Journal of Investigative Dermatology. Dr. Cooley is the author of a recent article entitled "The Role of Ischemia Reperfusion Injury in Hair Transplantation."  Dr. Cooley is a frequent featured speaker at major hair restoration conferences.
