Female Hair Loss Due to Excessive Blow Drying and Straightening - Thursday, October 15, 2009

Question:

I am a 50 year old Asian woman with shoulder length hair and I live in Northern California (Antioch). I wash my hair daily, use a blow dryer, a straightening iron, and hairspray. I've been noticing recently that after showering, a bunch of hair has fallen out in the bath tub. I am afraid I will be bald someday. Does aloe help? What should I do?

Answer:

There are a number of possible causes for female hair loss. Additionally, hair shedding up to 50 to 100 hairs daily is considered a normal and healthy part of each hair's growth cycle.

However, I'm wondering if all the harsh treatments you provide for your hair such as regular blow drying, use of the straightening iron, etc. isn't damaging your hair causing it to become dry, brittle, and inevitably break. In my opinion, ease off the harsh treatments and see if this helps.
