Is Taking Propecia for Hair Loss 2 Times a Week Effective? - Sunday, February 07, 2010

Question:

Would taking 1 mg of Propecia twice a week be effective? I'm 19 and I took it everyday for two weeks and had some sexual side effects, I'm not sure if it's just my subjective view but I feel as if my hair has gotten thicker at the middle and back, but not so much at the hairline. I'm taking 12% minoxidil as well. When will see results in my hairline?

Answer:

Because Merck's website for Propecia (finasteride) claims that many consumers of the drug will stop experiencing side effects with continued daily use, you could consider continuing to take it every day and see if the side effects go away over time. However, many hair restoration physicians recommend that Propecia (finasteride) consumers who experience side effects try reducing the quantity of Propecia they take per week. Its benefit for hair loss may decrease, but it's probably more effective than not taking it at all and may minimize or eliminate the side effects. In my opinion, speak to your physician to garner his medical opinion on how often he thinks you should take Propecia.

Before evaluating the effectiveness of minoxidil or Propecia, it's recommended to use them for 6 to 12 months respectively. While both medications are typically pretty good at strengthening and thickening existing hair, neither are proven to regrow hair in completely bald areas. Depending on how much loss you have at the hairline, these hair loss treatments may or may not have any effect. Giving them the adequate time to do their job however, is the best way to find out.

I hope this helps.
