Hair Loss Myth: Cutting My Hair Will Make it Grow Back Thicker - Wednesday, December 05, 2007

There are many hair loss causes including genetic hair loss (male pattern baldness, female pattern baldness), diffuse alopecia (such as telogen effluvium), traction alopecia, etc. While hereditary hair loss is caused by genes, the other conditions causing baldness can come from various physicial and psychological conditions.

Unfortunately, cutting your hair will not thicken or help you regrow hair. This is a hair loss myth. The reason his hair loss myth started was because cutting hair can sometimes make hair appear thicker because shorter hair typically has more body which promotes the illusion of thicker hair. Additionally miniaturized hair is thicker toward the base of the hair shaft than the top. Cutting hair will eliminate the thinner parts of the hair giving your hair an overall healthy appearance, thus appearing thicker.

The appearance of thicker hair is not the same as new hair growth.  Once the hair grows back to the same length it will appear just as thick/thin as it did before the hair cut.

To date, the only proven hair loss treatments are FDA approved hair loss drugs Propecia (finasteride) and Rogaine (minoxodil). If you are balding due to genetic hair loss, I recommend considering these hair loss medications.
