Is there Any Way to Predict How Far Hair Loss Will Progress? - Monday, March 10, 2008

Question:

I am losing my hair and really am concerned about going completely bald. Is there any way to predict how far my hair loss will progress? Thanks.

Answer:

Hair loss is considered to be both progressive and unpredictable. Though family history of hair loss can be used as a tool, there is no way of saying how much hair you will actually lose due to genetic variants. Also, do not make the mistake of thinking that genetic hair loss is strictly linked to your maternal grandfather, or for females, your paternal grandmother. Hair loss can be inherited by either side of the family and can be aggressive or mild.

If you suspect that you are going bald, I recommend consulting with a dermatologist or hair restoration physician who can look for hair miniaturization and then recommend a proper hair loss treatment.
