Unusual Hair Loss on the Left Side of My Head - What's Causing This? - Tuesday, August 19, 2008

Question:

I am 24 years old and the left side of my head has started experiencing hair loss. Is there any hair loss treatment that will prevent future balding of this area? How much does it cost and what is the duration of this solution for baldness?

Answer:

Hair loss on one side of the scalp doesn't sound like typical female or male pattern baldness (androgenic alopecia). Therefore, I encourage you to consult with a dermatologist who can evaluate your scalp and perform medical tests to determine its cause. Only then can a proper hair loss treatment be recommended.

Non-genetic hair loss can be caused by a number of things including hormonal changes in the body, certain medication, a thyroid condition, an iron deficiency, low ferritin levels, traumatic stress (not to be confused with every day stressors like finances, getting to work on time, etc.), extreme malnutrition, etc. Be sure to ask your dermatologist about these possibilities and get all necessary tests to determine the cause of your hair loss.

Treating your balding condition and the duration of treatment will depend on the cause of your condition. In many cases, non-genetic hair loss can be reversed if the condition causing it is properly remedied.
