Is it Normal for Women with Hair Loss to Take Propecia (Finasteride)? - Sunday, October 19, 2008

Question:

My dermatologist has just prescribed Propecia for me for my hair loss. When I asked him about any possible side effects for women he suggested that I ask my pharmacist and also told me to be aware that the pharmasist may indicate that this hair loss treatment is for men. Is it common for women to use Propecia for hair loss and what would the side effects be for women?

Answer:

I find it a little strange that your dermatologist wouldn’t take the time to go over the potential side effects of Propecia especially since it is not typically prescribed to women, for a few very important reasons.

Propecia (finasteride) should not be used by pregnant women with hair loss or even touched since it can be harmful to the fetus. Some dermatologists will prescribe Propecia to women if there is no chance or desire of pregnancy while on Propecia.

Propecia has other side effects, some that only effect men and others that are universal. Read more about Propecia side effects.
