Dealing with Early Signs of Hair Loss - How to Treat it? - Sunday, June 21, 2009
Question: Hello! I am nearly 23 and since about the age of 19/20 my hair has been thinning. There's a tiny bald spot in the front but the rest is just thinning and it appears to be spreading like wildfire! I don't have much money. I'm a college student and out on my own. And yes - baldness runs rapid on my dad's side of the family (both sexes). What could you suggest for me? Answer: It can be very emotional when you first discover you are losing your hair. And unless you do something to attempt to slow it down or stop it, male pattern baldness will continue to progress as genetically programmed. How fast and far baldness will spread is determined by your genes and your hair's resistance to DHT, the hormone responsible for hereditary hair loss. At your young age, your best bet at this point to try to slow down, stop, or thicken your thinning hair is to consider FDA approved non-surgical proven hair loss treatments like Propecia (finasteride) and Rogaine (minoxidil). All medication comes with the possibility of side effects, so be sure to research them and consult with a doctor to learn more about the benefits, limitations, and potential side effects of these drugs.
