Treating Telogen Effluvium Hair Loss with Rogaine (Minoxidil)- Wednesday, January 11, 2012
Question:
I went through a separation and lost nearly twenty pounds in less than two months. I'd say I lost 30% of my hair due to telogen effluvium. Will Rogaine help start the regrowth process? Will Rogaine make my hair stronger and healthier when it starts growing back?
Answer:
I'm very sorry to hear that stress and weight loss have led
to thinning hair. Minoxidil is a vasodilator that increases blood flow to the
scalp. In those patients for whom it works, it may increase hair density by
causing miniaturized hair follicles to increase in size and also by prolonging
the anagen or growth phase of the hairs.
While Rogaine
(minoxidil) may help to regrow hair lost to telogen
effluvium, there are no guarantees. If you opt to try it, I suggest
using it as directed for a minimum of 4 to 6 months before assessing your
results.
