How to Stop Scalp Irritation and Dryness from Rogaine Foam for Hair Loss- Monday, January 26, 2009

Question:

I was using Rogaine foam for hair loss, but it dried out my scalp so much that I had to stop using it. My scalp was so dry it actually hurt and there was constantly flakes coming off my head like dandruff. Do you have any advice on how to stop that? Thank you.

Answer:

You can try counteracting irritation of the scalp from Rogaine foam with Nizoral shampoo a few days a week. Nizoral is designed to help stop dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. Additionally, ketoconazole, the active ingredient in Nizoral is found to be a weak DHT inhibitor which may be a helpful adjunct hair loss treatment.

Overuse of Nizoral can also cause dryness of the scalp and hair. A gentler and milder shampoo that may be helpful would be something like Head and Shoulders shampoo.
