Dr. Keene typically limits her surgery to one patient per day, utilizing either the follicular unit strip surgery (FUSS) technique, (with double follicular units in some areas to provide maximum density for less cost), or follicular unit extraction (FUE). She has a very hands on approach in the surgery room, and will be the only person making any incisions or excisions during your procedure.
With the FUSS procedure, she uses the trichophytic closure and lateral slits where appropriate. She takes measures to help minimize trauma during the surgery both in terms of the depth of the incisions and to the grafts themselves. Graft dissection at Dr. Keene’s clinic is done utilizing high magnification microscopes and video scopes. For FUE grafts, Dr Keene removes each graft using either a rotating biopsy excision, or a hybrid oscillating device, in very small follicular unit excisions from .8 mms in circumference.
Dr. Keene performs every aspect of the surgery, from donor removal, to creating the recipient sites, to placing the grafts, along with her experienced assistants. Each patient is given not just her staff's attention, but her personal attention throughout the surgery.
Creating a natural hairline is one of the most important elements of a successful hair transplant. Dr. Keene takes her time to create a natural looking and refined looking hairline that mimic nature. Today, patients expect and receive an undetectable hairline that can stand on its own after one session. The days of "pluggy" and "grafty" looking hairlines are no longer tolerated and are long gone in an experienced surgeon's hands. This high "degree" of naturalness can be achieved using the techniques and methods of utra refined incisional follicular unit hair transplants, described in this web site.
As a graduate of the University of Minnesota Medical School, Dr. Keene studied general surgery for five years at the University of Arizona, serving as chief surgical resident in her final year of residency. She spent two years studying hair loss and surgical hair restoration techniques before establishing her own clinic, Physician’s Hair Institute.
Dr. Keene is certified by the American Board of Surgery as a general surgeon, which is approved by the American Board of Medical Specialties. The American Board of Medical Specialties is the only recognized board for medical specialties. She is also a Fellow of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery. Dr. Keene has acted as an expert consultant to the Arizona Board of Medical Examiners in reviewing hair restoration surgery cases. She is a member of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS), and has intermittently participated in the European and other Societies of Hair Restoration Surgery.
Since 1995, she has participated among a team of surgeons teaching follicular unit grafting to doctors from all over the world at the International Hair Restoration Surgery conferences. She performs both FUE and FUT regularly, so you can choose based on your preferences.
Dr. Keene has received numerous awards from her colleagues in the field, including the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, the European Society and the Italian Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, recognizing her primary work in follicular unit grafting and medical devices to improve quality and efficiency in megasessions.
