Dr. Alan Feller, D.O. specializes in ultra refined follicular unit mega sessions of 2,500 to 4,500 plus grafts that can be dense packed into lateral slit incision at over 40 grafts per sq cm.
Dr. Alan S. Feller, D.O. has specialized in Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) since its early inception in 1994; and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) since its introduction in the U.S. in 2002.
He was born, raised, attended medical school, and practices in New York. Dr. Feller’s early adoption and refinement of ultra refined hair transplant advances has garnered him a reputation as a leading edge hair transplant physician. His well documented results and numerous patient accolades on discussion forums have made him a favorite choice among patients who have done extensive online research.
View highlights of our visit to Dr Feller's clinic.
Dr. Feller entered the field of hair transplantation shortly after receiving his medical credentials from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine at New York Institute of Technology. He is a member of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) since 1995 and has been a featured guest lecturer at ISHRS meetings. He has also authored published academic papers on the topic of hair transplantation as well as tissue regeneration. He is also an inventor of newly patented instrumentation and protocols for the hair transplant field.
Through the years, Dr. Feller has trained several physicians from both the U.S. and abroad in the intricacies of modern hair transplantation techniques. He continues to offer professional seminars and workshops to physicians and their technicians in his Great Neck office.
Dr. Feller prides himself on always being on the cutting edge of hair transplantation technology and maintains a well-stocked research and development laboratory. He is the inventor of “Cardioscope”- a new kind of heart monitor; the “Feller Gynescope”-a device for detecting pre-cancerous states in women; “shatter valve technology” for implantable devices, “inductive-deflation” for implantable devices.
Most recently Dr. Feller completed the filing, office actions, and administrative requirements for U.S. Patents on new Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) instrumentation and protocols to facilitate graft removal from the donor area without the use of a standard scalpel. Some of this technology was featured in the 4th edition of “Hair Transplantation”, the authoritative text of the hair transplant field. Two of these new patents will issue before the end of 2006.

Hair Transplant Surgery: Recommended Interval Between Strip Procedures? - 6/10/2013.
I would give the scalp a minimum of 8 months before round two, but optimally a year and a half. By then the recipient area is revascularized and the donor area is stable.

Follicular Unit Extraction Hair Transplants (FUE): Using Techs to Harvest Grafts? - 5/31/2013.
In the end, it’s both the law and ethics that dictates what technicians can do. When I started performing FUEs in 2002 I spoke with a medical malpractice attorney about the legalities and liabilities of the FUE procedure.

What’s the Best Tool for Performing Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) Hair Transplants? - 9/1/2011.
Patients really shouldn’t concern themselves too much with the techniques favored by particular hair transplant surgeons because, in the end, it’s the results that count. No single technique is going to be the best or the worst. If only hair restoration surgery were that simple and clear cut.

Will Follicular Unit Extraction Completely Replace Strip Hair Transplants in the Future? - 6/9/2011.
I never thought that FUE could replace follicular unit transplantation (FUT) because of the trauma associated with FUE compared to strip.

Two Different Hair Transplant Surgeons Estimated Completely Different Numbers of Available Follicular Unit Grafts? - 10/23/2010.
All hair restoration physicians have their own take on what donor resources are available. Their are many more variables than one might think. For example, someone who actually went to the trouble to find out the average density of their donor

What are the Negatives of FUE when Compared to FUT? - 8/14/2010.
There can be no question that growth from follicular unit extraction (FUE) cases is not as consistent as that of strip procedures. The reason is obvious: the amount of trauma the follicular unit grafts must endure during FUE surgery, even the very best and meticulous FUE surgery, is far greater than the amount of trauma experienced by the equivalent FUT grafts. It’s a simple matter of physics.

Is FUE as Reliable as a Strip Procedure (FUT)? - 6/10/2010.
In my opinion, based on regular FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) experience since the introduction of FUE to the western hemisphere, I can say with confidence that FUE is simply not as reliable as strip (Follicular Unit Transplant) with respect to consistent yields. I have discussed this reality with several other FUE hair transplant doctors whom I admire and respect and their conclusions are the same.

Introducing the New Revolutionary Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) Surgical Tool - 5/20/2009.
I would like to announce the unveiling of a new tool designed specifically for the performance of Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) surgery. It is my hope that every hair transplant doctor already performing FUE surgery, or those who would simply like to start offering this wonderful procedure to their patients, will explore this new tool and perhaps add it to their own clinical practice. Incorporated into its design are practical solutions to problems that have plagued the follicular unit extraction industry since it’s introduction to the Western Hemisphere in 2001. Deleterious forces resulting in graft damage during FUE procedures such as: Torsion, Traction, Compression, Overheating, and Desiccation are addressed and minimized using this new instrument like none other.

Does a Hair Transplant Last Forever? - 10/7/2008.
Fortunately most hair transplant hair does in fact stay for “life”. However, there is a small percentage of the population that continues to lose hair in the donor area as they progress in age. It then stands to reason that such people will lose the hair when it’s transplanted. Fortunately this is not common.
Another rare variant are patients who’ve had a successful hair restoration procedure and enjoyed a couple of years of thick hair growth. Then seemingly out of nowhere the transplanted hair begins to thin. This has happened with at least 2 of my patientsin the past that I know of. In this case the best hair loss treatment is to implant more hair to make up for the volume difference.

Proper Placement of the Scar in Hair Transplant Surgery - 8/12/2008.
Much of the hair transplant industry has been cleaned up since the advent of hair loss forums and websites like the Hair Transplant Network. However, there are still areas of hair restoration that remain largely unaddressed such as the proper “absolute” position of donor incisions.

Is Hair Transplantation a Permanent Solution? - 5/26/2008.
Make no mistake about it. A hair loss sufferer can lose some of his transplanted hair over the years. It’s not common, but it DOES happen. What can happen in a few hair transplant patients is that the caliber of the transplanted hairs can actually thin noticeably within 3 years of hair restoration surgery. I have no idea why this happens, but it is a definite phenomenon in few patients. The way to counter this graft thinning is simply to implant more hair in the area.

Isn’t it Better to do Follicular Unit Hair Transplantation (FUT) Before Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)? - 5/7/2008.
Because there is no agreed upon terminology for follicular unit extraction (FUE) procedures it is difficult to have a conversation about it because key words mean different things to different people. Right now FUE is NOT a scientific discipline. It is art, and as art it is difficult to describe accurately. Unfortunately it is the lack of agreed upon definitions that allows ten different clinics to SOUND like they are offering ten different forms of FUE...

What are the Benefits, Limitations, and Potential Problems of FUE/FIT? - 12/7/2008.
The number one limitation of Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) / Follicular Isolation Technique (FIT) are the doctors themselves. Since its introduction to the world circa 2001, FUE has been shunned, ignored, or outright maligned by every strip hair transplant doctor who saw it as a threat. Very few embraced the challenge and did the hard work necessary to achieve any level of proficiency.
