A synergistic relationship between two or more substances is one that produces an effect greater than the sum of its parts. You can think of it as a "1+1=3" relationship. It is often said that the hair loss drugs Rogaine (minoxidil) and Propecia (finasteride) have such a relationship.
Though I'm not aware of any studies proving this premise, it is possible that, when used together, the effects of these drugs are magnified. The likely reason for this is that each of these treatments works differently to regrow hair. Rogaine is a vasodilator that works directly on the hair follicles by increasing blood flow to miniaturized hairs. This helps them to become more robust. Propecia, on the other hand, is a DHT inhibitor. DHT is the hormone that causes genetic hair loss. By inhibiting the production of DHT, hair loss can be slowed or prevented.
While these medical hair loss treatments can be used independently, it's best to use them together for best results.
