Provillus - Miracle Hair Loss Treatment?

The hair loss profession is a 2.8-billion-dollar a year industry and each day a new so called miraculous treatment is discovered that claims to rejuvenate and regrow lost hair. But are these treatments actually viable options to treat androgenic alopecia or genetic hair loss? In this article, we discuss the hair loss treatment Provillus.

Provillus ingredients

Provillus contains many organic and all-natural ingredients, making it potentially favorable to hair loss medication like Propecia. However, do the ingredients in Provillus really stop hair loss and regrow hair? Ingredients in Provillus include: Magnesium, Zinc, Saw Palmetto, Vitamin B6, Biotin, and a Proprietary Blend that contains Muira Puama P, Eleuthero Root, Stinging Nettle, Pumpkin, and Uva-Ursi, and 5% minoxidil . It’s important to note that the topical solution contains Minoxidil, not the capsules. Furthermore, the only FDA proven ingredient to stop the progression of androgenic alopecia or genetic hair loss is minoxidil. Moreover, while the words "proprietary blends" sounds technical and fancy, all it means is that the amount of each ingredient is unknown to the consumer without laboratory testing.

Ingredient breakdown:

Magnesium deficiencies have been linked to hair loss. However, that is only in cases where deficiencies exist. Zinc, like Magnesium can cause hair loss if there is a deficiency. Saw Palmetto is said to be an inhibitor of Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Studies have shown that Saw Palmetto can be an effective 5 alpha reductase inhibitor however, no formal tests have been performed on saw palmetto and its relation to hair growth. Vitamin B6 increases the flow of oxygenated blood to the hair follicle and scalp, but that is for healthy hair follicles not affected by Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Biotin is a water-soluble B Vitamin that can cause hair loss if there is a deficiency. However, Biotin is found in many of the foods we consume today such as beef, eggs, Avocado, Salmon, and Cheese.

Given that Provillus topical treatment contains one FDA approved ingredient Minoxidil; we can at least say that it may have some marginal benefit for men and women suffering from genetic hair loss. However, due to the lack research and evidence in the other herbal ingredients, it may be better to stick with Propecia (finasteride) and Rogaine (minoxidil) which have been approved by the FDA to be effective in treating male pattern and female pattern hair loss.
