Below is a transcript of the hair transplant video for your reference.

"I think that unfortunately in our society, hair is very important. I think that you can really change people's lives. The thing with this field is that it's a very small field and it's essentially in its infancy. Things have already dramatically changed. I think as individual practioners we're really able to actually move the field in the direction we want, where a lot of the fields in medicine has been very well established. I think in hair restoration, the innovations have really changed the nature of what we can do. The patients are really happy and I think that people really use hair to judge their self esteem and it's just so much a part of how they look and feel. I think we're really improving people's lives."

How to Treat Patients with Hair Loss

Dr. Robert Bernstein discusses how he treats patients with hair loss as patients, not just as surgical candidates for hair transplantation.

Below is a transcript of the hair restoration video for your reference.

"I think the most important thing in my practice is that we don't view people as coming in for hair transplants. We view them coming in as having a hair loss problem or self image problem. First of all, we try to understand exactly what bothers them. And then the next thing is to try to find out what the best solution is. Sometimes people just need a little hand holding. Many people come in having very early hair loss and need medical therapy. Many times women come in and they don't have androgenetic alopecia. They either have hair loss from thyroid disease or some other condition. So it's really important to evaluate the person very thoroughly first and make sure that those people who are eventually going to have surgery have considered other options and are really appropriate candidates for surgery. We look at evaluating people as having hair loss, not as being candidates for hair restoration surgery."

Treatments and Procedures Dr. Bernstein Provides His Patients

Dr. Robert Bernstein discusses the services he provides his patients including surgical hair restoration techniques such as follicular unit hair transplantation via strip and follicular unit extraction (FUE), medical hair loss treatments, etc.

Below is a transcript of the hair transplant video for your reference.

"Our main focus is follicular unit hair transplantation and that's really an all encompassing procedure. It involves strip harvesting which is the main stay. We do follicular unit extraction (FUE) where we don't use the donor strip, we use in select patients. We do a lot of repair work in our practice. Many of the old procedures such as hair plugs can be improved and we do a lot of the fine asthetic work and we do eyebrow restoration. So we really offer the whole gamet of things and of course we also, many of our patients are on medical therapy and actually don't need hair transplantation."

Advantages of Researching Hair Transplantation on the Internet

Dr. Robert Bernstein discusses the advantages and disadvantages of researching hair transplantation on the internet.

Below is a transcript of the hair transplant video for your reference.

"I think that the internet has helped a great deal because it allows people to get information from other patients. And I think sites such as the Hair Transplant Network are great because it's really a destination point for people that have hair loss and it allows people in one site to be exposed to a lot of different doctors, a lot of different ideas, hear a lot of patient's complaints, praises and it's really just open. The internet can be bad because in some ways, what they hear are not always in peer reviewed journals but on the other hand, they hear real people speaking. There's so much information that it's hard for people to kind of manage it, it kind of just happens itself and it's really just the way it is. But I think it's a good way for people to get a lot of information really, really quickly."

How Dr. Bernstein Changed an 8 Year Old Girl's Life with Hair Transplant Surgery

Dr. Robert Bernstein shares a story of how he helped give an 8 year old girl her life back by performing hair transplant surgery on the bald area of her scalp after a benign brain tumor was removed.

Below is a transcript of the hair transplant video for your reference.

"I think that one of the recent patients that really comes to mind is that we had an 8 year old girl who had a benign brain tumor who had an operation. Although the surgery was successful, it left some geometric scars on the side of her head. She started the second grade and she was OK, but people started to tease her and she started to become self conscious. We were able to do a couple of hair transplants to make this whole bald area go away. And it totally changed her personality, her grades came up. I think also it got rid of her memory of the surgery. While she had the bald area, she always remembered having the tumor and afterwards, it was totally gone."

Why Dr. Bernstein Provides In-Depth In-Person Consultations

Dr. Robert Bernstein discusses the importance of a thorough in-person consultation to determine what the hair loss patient's needs are and working with them to get their expectations in line with what Dr. Bernstein can accomplish for them.

Below is a transcript of the hair transplant video for your reference.

"My staff sometimes teases me because my opening question is always 'What's up?' And I think it's very important because very often we're very surprised what people come into the office for. And I think what we think might be bothering a person might be totally different from what's actually bothering them. I think an open ended question initially really gets a sense what's in the patient's mind. Because that's what we're trying to help. Then the next thing that's important is to do a very thorough evaluation and that comes with a very extensive history. And then a very detailed examination. In our office, we measure density, scalp laxity, the hair counts, miniaturization so we really try to get a sense of what the hair reserves are. And then to find out exactly what their needs are and to put the two together. You have to make sure what they actually want is what we can actually do. And in many cases, they're very different at least initially. And then part of the consultation is to try to have them come together and try to get their expectations to match what we can actually do for them."

Why Patients Choose Dr. Bernstein for Hair Transplant Surgery

Dr. Robert Bernstein discusses why hair loss suffering men and women choose him and his hair transplant clinic for their surgical hair restoration procedure.

Below is a transcript of the hair transplant video for your reference.

"I think that the main thing is that patients when they come to our facility see me, and I see them in the consult, I'm very accessible after the consultation. Sometimes people have multiple consults before they come to see us. And I'm involved in the entire procedure so I'm involved with the patient from start to finish and the follow-up. Our staff has really been with us since the inception of follicular unit hair transplantation. They live and breathe this procedure. So we have expertise in microscopic dissection and placing and all the components that make for a really fantastic hair transplant procedure."

Obtaining Excellent Results and Reversing Bad Hair Transplants

Dr. Robert Bernstein discusses the difference today's surgical hair transplant techniques make in patient's lives, especially reversing those with bad hair transplants.

Below is a transcript of the hair transplantation video for your reference.

"I think that people, especially when they're entering the work force, especially if people are in sales, feel insecure. We had a person who was selling cars and he was 30 years old, had early frontal hair loss and totally felt that it handicapped him at work. Although I don't think it made much of a difference, to him it was a big deal. So he came back one year after the hair transplant and said that sales have picked up, he's more confident. Many of the people that feel they've had the biggest change are those who've had transplants previously with the old techniques. We're able to take the old procedures where people had hair plugs pointig in the wrong direction and actually change it. And people who would walk around with hairpieces or baseball caps for years were finally able to be free of that. And then technology is only evolving over the last several years and we're finally able to reverse a bad hair transplant".

How Patients Revolutionized Today's Hair Transplants

Dr. Robert Bernstein discusses the evolution of hair transplantation including how patients revolutionized the hair transplant profession by demanding today's follicular unit hair transplant procedure. Doctors only took note of this procedure once a select few physicians, including Dr. Bob Bernstein was regularly performing it and started chatting about it on the internet.

Below is a transcript of the hair transplant video for your reference.

"I think that it's interesting because when we gave the first presentations in the society, the ISHRS, nobody was doing the procedure and people thought we were crazy. It wasn't until patients started to chat about the procedure on the internet that doctors really started taking notice. You needed microscopes, you needed a huge team and people just didn't want to do it. It wasn't until there was a popular demand for the procedure that doctors started taking notice. And it wasn't until about 1999 or 2000 that even the society was really even talking about it at meetings. They were still talking about different ways to make slit grafts and scalp reductions and all of the sudden around 2000, things started to turn around where the meeting now is almost entirely follicular units. So it's really been an incredible change. It's been exponential. It started very slowly the first couple of years."
