Is My Hairline Maturing or Am I Going Bald?

Question:

I've just noticed that the hair in the corners of my forehead are a lot thinner than in the area of the hairline right over my eyes. My dad started to lose his hair when he was at my age (20), and maybe a little earlier. Should I suspect that this is starting to happen to me?

Answer:

What you are experiencing may simply be a maturing hairline or you may be witnessing the early stages of androgenic alopecia (male pattern balding). I recommend that you consult with a dermatologist or one of our recommended hair loss doctors. Some experts perform miniaturization mapping combined with an analysis of your family history in order to help determine your future hair loss pattern.

Your doctor may discuss with you the benefits of Rogaine (minoxidil) and Propecia (finasteride). The combination of Rogaine and Propecia is widely considered to be the most effective medical hair loss treatment currently available. The two drugs have a synergistic and complementary effect on the thinning, balding scalp.
