Top 10 Hair Loss Myths and Real Hair Loss Treatments: (BLOG)

The most common type of hair loss is Androgenetic Alopecia (male pattern baldness and female pattern baldness).  The problem here is genetics.  Balding men and women often fall victim to beleiving the great number of hair loss myths presented on and offline.  These myths often prevent balding men and women worldwide from using hair loss treatments that really work.  Below is a common list of the top 10 myths to watch out for.

1. HAIR LOSS IS GENETICALLY LINKED TO ONLY YOUR MOTHER’S SIDE OF THE FAMILY

It is true that Androgenetic Alopecia (male and female pattern baldness) is genetic. But the genetic link is to BOTH the mother’s and father’s side of the family.  Despite the rumors, It is not true that hair loss is determined by your mother’s father alone.

2. HAIR LOSS IS CAUSED BY WEARING A TIGHT FITTING HAT.

Good news for hat lovers, thinning hair is not caused by wearing a hat as some might suggest. Though it is true that many people who are balding like to wear a hat to hide their baldness.

3. COMBING YOUR HAIR WILL FACILITATE BALDNESS. USE A BRUSH

Most experts believe a comb is better for hair care as it’s less likely to cause split ends than use of a brush.  Neither however, will cause or facilitate genetic hair loss in any way.  

4. STANDING ON YOUR HEAD CAN REVERSE HAIR LOSS AND REGROW HAIR

The theory is that increasing circulation by adding more blood to the head that it would stimulate growth.  Unfortunately, there is no proof that standing on your head can regrow hair.

5. CUTTING YOUR HAIR WILL MAKE IT THICKER

Though cutting your hair may make it appear more dense and full due to the removal of split ends and increased health, your hair will not thicken.  Once the hair that was cut grows back, it will appear as it did before. 

6. BLOW DRYING CAUSES HAIR LOSS

Though blow drying can damage your hair by exposing it to extreme heat, using it as recommended by the manufacturer will not cause hair loss.

7. WASHING YOUR HAIR TOO MUCH CAUSES HAIR LOSS

It is always wise to be cautious of what chemicals we put in our hair, but shampooing daily or even twice a day will not cause hair loss.  The hairs seen in the shower could be due to normal hair shedding or hereditary baldness (androgenic alopecia), but shampooing in itself does facilitate going bald.

8. STRESS CAUSES HAIR LOSS

There are certain types of hair loss other than male and female pattern baldness that may be caused by extreme or traumatic stress. But the most most common type, genetic hair loss, is not caused by stress including prolonged stressors. Examples of every day stress that will not facilitate balding include meeting deadlines, financial concerns, time constraints, etc.

9. HAIR LOSS IS CAUSED BY VIGOROUS TOWEL DRYING

Hair may shed because of the normal hair growth cycle or because it is damaged but will always grow back but irreversible hair loss is not caused by towel drying.   The only hairs that won’t grow back are those that are affected by hereditary hair loss. 

10. THERE ARE NO TREATMENTS FOR HAIR LOSS AVAILABLE

Though there is no cure for hair loss to date, there are ways that hair loss can be treated.  FDA approved medications such as Propecia (finasteride) and Rogaine 5% (minoxidil), hair surgery and hair pieces are all means to help hair loss sufferers restore hair or the appearance of hair.  Hopefully future treatments such as hair multiplication will eventually become available which will get us closer to being able to restore a full head of hair.
